America’s journey to find its place in the European-dominated classical repertory has led to a beautiful variety of compositional styles over the past 150 years. Some composers have taken parts of the classical tradition and expounded on them in individualistic ways, while others have broken apart entirely from that tradition to celebrate American folk music. In the end (as with our diverse nation itself) there is most often a blend of both. As a celebration of America’s diverse musical voice over a century-and-a-half, this program includes elements of American folk, European-style romanticism, spirituals, country dances, jazz, and the developing voices of contemporary American composers.
Featuring music by Mark Carlson, John Williams, Jessica Meyer, Rebecca Clarke, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Amy Beach, George Gershwin, Charles Ives, and Paul Wiancko.
FREE concert, Wednesday, June 30th @ 7:00pm at The Radius Center.
