Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) by George Crumb is a stunning masterpiece of the 20th century, inspired by a tape recording of the sounds emitted by the humpback whale. For three “masked” performers (flute, cello, and piano), this work’s unique sounds illustrate five different geologic periods, ancient beings, and mystical premonitions of nature. Join flutist Catherine Gregory, cellist Brook Speltz, and pianist Daniel Anastasio on a gripping journey through time, including an in-depth description of the most significant elements of the piece.
