Taryn Lee, horn

Taryn Lee is a second-year Horn Fellow at the New World Symphony. She is an accomplished musician and teaching artist who believes in music’s ability to recenter and express the dynamic nature of emotion. Performing under the batons of Marin Alsop and Leon Fleisher, serving a year with ArtistYear Americorps, working with the Utah Symphony’s development team and cofounding a fully remote wind quintet, Taryn is invested in the ever-changing musical ecosystem.

Prior to joining the New World Symphony, Taryn performed as a freelancer throughout Ohio and Kentucky and presented mindful music explorations with an emphasis on social-emotional learning through The Well in Cincinnati. During the COVID-19 isolation period, Taryn launched Our Time Wind Quintet. Through the collaborative spirit of the group, she worked with award-winning authors to pair music with spoken word, commissioned new works that used Zoom as an instrument in itself and choreographed/edited performative videos that created some levity in a difficult period for us all.

Taryn is grateful to her most influential mentor, Denise Tryon, as well as Elizabeth Freimuth, Ashely Hall-Tighe and Michael Thornton for their guidance in shaping her technique, artistry and relationship to the horn. Taryn received her artist diploma from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, master’s degree from the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University and bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has spent summers at the Wintergreen Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Colorado College Music Festival, and Blackburn Music Academy of Festival Napa Valley.

When she has a moment to herself, Taryn enjoys hiking in the majesty of the Utah and Colorado mountains, finishing a macrame project or hitting the dance floor.
